A new feature being introduced to Windows 10 users with the new Creators Update is the Night Light function which reduces the amount of blue light being used on a device’s screen.
After the Creators Update is installed on a Windows 10 PC, the Night Light can be flipped on and off fairly easy via a new button in the Action Center. The real benefit of this feature though is in its settings which allows users to customize the times in which the mode can switch itself on an off. Night Light mode can be synced with the real-world sunrise and sunset or exact times can be specified. Unfortunately these settings aren’t working properly for many users.
As it stands right now, the Night Light mode will activate and turn off for the times specified for the user but only as long as the Windows 10 computer stays on. Currently, if Night Light is set to turn on via a specified time setting (or sunset option) and the computer is turned completely off afterwards, the mode will remain active regardless of the specified end time whenever its turned on the next day. Thankfully, the screen color options can be corrected by simply going into the settings and switching Night Light off and on and then off again but it’s still quite a significant bug that will affect the many people who shut down their computer at night and don’t leave it in Sleep Mode.
The Windows 10 Creators Update has already begun rolling out to users with most users expecting to get it within the next two weeks or so. Have you gotten the Creators Update yet and also noticed this bug? Let us know in the comments below.

Like mobile phones and many other devices, computers running Windows 10 have a feature that can filter out blue light to make the screen easier on your eyes at night. This feature is appropriately called night light.
Sometimes it doesn’t work as intended, however. The most common problem being that it doesn’t turn on at the scheduled time. If you’re having this or another problem with night light, this guide will help you fix it.
Quick Jump
If night light won’t come on when it’s supposed to, location settings may be to blame:
Night light usually turns on at sunset where you are located. When the location setting is off, night light isn’t able to determine when sunset is. Making sure location services are turned on should fix this. If you don’t want to turn on location services for your computer, jump to the next section, where I cover how to program the time for night light to turn on.
Here’s how to access and change location settings:
To check that this worked, you’ll want to now go to your night light settings:
If you’d like to instead manually schedule when night light turns on and off, here’s what you do:
Time settings may also be a factor if night light isn’t turning on when it should:![]()
Windows sometimes has trouble synchronizing the time properly. Here’s how to check and fix it:
If it’s not able to synchronize with the time server, you’ll either need to change the server or set the time manually. Read on for the instructions.
Changing the time server has to be done from Control Panel. Here’s how:
If for some reason none of the servers work, then you can set the time manually by doing the following:
If night light isn’t working at all, there are different steps you can take to fix it:
What those steps are will depend on whether or not you can change night light’s settings.
If the button for turning night light on is grayed out you should be able to fix it with some registry changes:
Using the registry to set night light’s data back to default should get it working again. Don’t forget to back up your registry before you make any changes. Rather than editing the registry manually, you can create a .reg file to make changes quickly and easily. Before you can do this, you need to have file extensions visible.
Here’s how to make them visible if they aren’t already:
Now you’re ready to create the .reg file. Here’s how:
You should now be able to turn night light on and off in settings.
If you can turn night light on in settings but it doesn’t respond or doesn’t change properly, problems with the display driver are likely:
These can usually be solved by updating or reinstalling your display driver software. How you do this will depend on your graphics hardware. If you aren’t sure what you have, you can check in device manager:
Once you’ve identified your hardware, you can download the the latest driver installer from the manufacturer’s website:
Once you’ve downloaded the necessary installer, run it and follow the on screen prompts. Some driver software may need to have the previous version uninstalled first, but it should prompt to do so or even do it automatically. Below is an example of the NVIDIA installer.
It’s also possible for user profile issues to cause night light to not work right:
Often this can be solved by simply signing out and back in to your account. Here’s how:
You can now go back to night light settings and see if it’s working.
Hopefully this guide has helped you get Windows’ night light feature working as it should. If you have any comments or questions, feel free to leave them below.

Hi Monika,
it is a known issue in 1903 Night light settings do not apply in some cases Microsoft has identified some scenarios where night light settings may stop working, for example: Connecting to (or disconnecting from) an external monitor, dock, or projector Rotating the screen Updating display drivers or making other display mode changes Affected platforms: Client: Windows 10, version 1903 Workaround: If you find that your night light settings have stopped working, try turning the night light on and off, or restart your computer. Note We recommend that you do not attempt to manually update using the Update now button or the Media Creation Tool until this issue has been resolved. Next steps: We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/releas...

This night light bug is known issue find already in insider previews.
Quote from insider blog with possible workaround.
We’re investigating reports that on certain devices, if fast startup is enabled, night light doesn’t turn on until after a restart. (Note: The problem will occur on a “cold” reboot or power off / power on. To work around if night light doesn’t turn on, use Start > Power > Restart.)
Update = Replace old bugs with new ones.

Hi Martmcd,
thank you for this answer. What does that sentence mean exactly?
Note We recommend that you do not attempt to manually update using the Update now button or the Media Creation Tool until this issue has been resolved.
I updated Windows 10 yesterday through MediaCreationTool. Is something wrong with that? Because my Windows Update Assistant reminded me that I can upgrade.

sorry, perhaps I should not have included that sentence as it is a bit late as you said you had already upgraded.
essentially, if night light is important to you, Microsoft are recommending that you don't upgrade yet. if you can cope without it until an update that fixes it is released that's fine.

Actually the Night Light WILL work you just need to reset a few things first.
For instance, I like the Dark color scheme anyway, not the light (BRIGHTER THAN BRIGHT) scheme 1903 has been installing for all of us. It took me awhile to figure out how to FIX this.
You do it IN Themes by selecting the Theme then clicking on 'Colors' Under 'Choose Your Color' you select
'Dark'
making sure your Transparency Effects are turned on. And NOW 'Night Light' will work also:
IF you turn it on and off from HERE:
And NOT here:

Hi Amy1CW,
I've tried this now, and yet, it still doesn't work. The only thing it works, it's re-sign, or restarting PC. It doesn't bother me too much, so I guess I will have to wait for the next update.
